___________________________

It was Science Friday. Today the students became chemists! They learned about chemical reactions.

The first reaction that the students saw was when an acid (vinegar) came in contact with baking soda.

The result was carbon dioxide.

We put baking soda in a balloon and vinegar in a water bottle. The balloon was attached to the bottle. As the baking soda and the vinegar mixed carbon dioxide was created and it blew up the balloon.

The students received a cup, vinegar, and an ordinary white egg.

The students learned that vinegar is an acid called acetic acid (CH2COOH). Vinegar from the store  is about 4% acetic acid and 96% water. The eggshells are made up of calcium carbonate (CaCO3).

When the acetic acid reacts to the calcium carbonate, bubbles begin to form on the egg. The bubbles are carbon dioxide (CO2).

The chemical reaction looks like this:

2 CH3COOH + CaCO3 = Ca(CH3COO)2 + H2O + CO2

Acetic Acid + Calcium Carbonate = Calcium acetate + Water + Carbon dioxide

We are leaving the eggs to soak in the vinegar.

We are trying a few brown, organic, free-range eggs too, to see if there is any different outcome.

Next week, we will check on the eggs to see what has happened.

Ssssshhhhh....don't give it away if you know :-)

The students enthusiastically participated as I read The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything.

Have a great weekend and see you back here on Day 40!
