Naked Eggs

This morning we began our "Naked Egg" Science project. In this project students see how the egg shell and the acid of the vinegar create a chemical reaction. After a few days, the egg shell will easily rub off and leave a "naked egg."

Science Portfolios

Today we begin our Science Portfolios. Students will be adding the science experiments to this folder and will use them at Open House to show off student work.

Typing

After writing a great sentence about snails, Dhruv began typing his sentence on the computer. He was learning where to place his fingers and how to create upper case letters.

Robert  began typing Word Wall words. He did a great job completing Pre-Primer and Primer.

We have officially started Science this week. Today, we made a chemical reaction with vinegar and baking soda. It is a simple experiment but the students always get a big kick out of it. Just look at their facial expressions! :-)

The Walking Song

This morning, I introduced the students to the "walking song." For the last few years, I have used this activity as a reward for good behaviour. Students are given instructions to walk, crawl, hop, march, etc. They find it fun and it is a good incentive for following the rules.

What does this picture mean?

Check back later to find out! I will tell you that it will be fun!

Commotion in the Ocean

Today, the students and I read Commotion in the Ocean by Giles Andreae and David Wojtowycz. This book entertained the students with cute little poems about creatures that adorn the oceans of the world like the gorgeous angel fish who also appears to be quite vain :-) and the octopus who tickles the tummy of her babies with all her tentacles.

Check this book out for yourself at Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

Weekly Poem

Oceans

Of all our planet's oceans,
three are bigger than the rest.
One is just gigantic.
Do you know it? Have you guessed?
See if you can name the three.
   And say the biggest first.
If you name these oceans right,
   Your teacher will just burst!

Pacific, Atlantic, Indian!

Fun Counting!

Kaidynce and Yasmin had a great time putting number cards in order and then adding the correct number of buttons for each card.

Star Student!

Our first Star Student for the new school year is Robert.

Robert will get the opportunity to wear the Star Student t-shirt for the week, a special chair, and a treat at the end of the week.

Parent Involvement Pays Off

Tiani can recognize 9 Word Wall Words!

In class we review and use words daily but in addition, at home, Tiana's mother set up her own Word Wall! That added assistance at home really reinforces the words and the importance of learning! Way to go!

Cut and Paste Art!

The students were given three different colours of construction paper and asked to create a work of art. Some chose landscape. Some chose portrait. Some planned. Some just started cutting and glueing. All of them concentrated and created unique works of art!

Center Time Activities

We have many different weekly centers that the students rotate through on a daily basis. Here are a few of the students hard at work (and fun).

I have never looked better :-)

Gary, my former student, drew this picture of me today. It really made me smile.

It is me!

Every year the students do some sort of self-portrait that we display them through the year. Last year we had a lot of vampires :-) This year we have students with very colourful hair :-)

Have you filled a bucket?

Each of us has an invisible bucket that is constantly emptied or filled depending on what others say or do to us.  When our bucket is full, we feel great.  When it’s empty, we feel awful.  We fill buckets by saying or doing things to others to increase their positive emotions - when we do this we also fill our own buckets.

Chrysanthemum

After reading Chrysanthemum and looking at pictures of chrysanthemums, students completed two projects: How Many Letters in Your Name book and a bucket full of chrysanthemums.

Technology in the Classroom

Introducing the students to the educational side of technology a fun thing to do on the first day.

Dhruv, Rhian, and Robert were thrilled to have my old laptop in the classroom and had fun on StarFall.

I am going to organize a list a websites for you to try at home. I will place the list on the sidebar of this blog, in the next week.

Everyone Develops at Their Own Speed

What better way to explain to a child that it's OK to be different?

Leo isn't reading, or writing, or drawing, or speaking, while all his friends are doing these things. Leo's father is very concerned and watches Leo for signs of develop as Leo's mother takes things as they come and let's Leo develop at his own speed.

Students made flowers to represent Leo in this art project.
