Day 11

It's a short week, but it will be packed with a lot of learning experiences.

We started the day in our gathering place and worked with our calendar wall. The students got the opportunity to fill in our Morning Calendar themselves.

Next, the students were introduced to Place Value and working with coin. We worked with coin flashcards first and then Liliana put 2 pennies on the coin chart to reflect the second day of September.

Megan helped us put the current weather on the class calendar. At the end of the month, we will graph the monthly weather.

Today, we read Flash, Crash, Rumble, and Roll and discussed thunder, lighting, and rain. The students were amazed to learn that:

  • Lightning travels at a speed of 60,000 miles per second.
  • The average bolt of lightning is 2-3 miles in length.

We discussed how reading makes us better readers and how much fun reading can be if we choose the right books. Then students from North Carolina entertained our class with a video they made called Open a Book.

Daily rotations were remarkable today! The first rotation was 21 minutes and the second rotation was 24 minutes. During that time; I was able to have conferences with 11 students.

Students Read to Self.

Students worked on the computes.

After recess, the students celebrated the great STAMINA day we had.

We proceeded to talk about Word Work, another part of the Daily 5. We made an I-Chart which shows the students' responsibilities and the responsibility of the teacher.

We went through the current Word Work activities on the left side of our cart. The students will beginning using some of these activities tomorrow!

Lastly, the students volunteered to "retell" the students' responsibilities during a rotation of Word Works.
