Science is usually one of the students' favourite things to do in the classroom. Science experiments always contain elements of discovery, excitement, surprise.

Today's experiment was all about weather and the density of hot and cold air.

We started by making a prediction graph.

I asked the question; will the balloon inflate when put in a bath of hot water?

We had two containers filled with water. The container on the right was filled with water that had been in the freezer for an hour. The container on the right was filled with water that had been microwaved for 10 minutes.

The students watched as the water bottle with the green balloon was plunged into a bath of cold water. Nothing happened to the balloon.

Then, a water bottle with a blue balloon was immersed in a bath of hot water. To the amazement of the students, the balloon began to inflate.

We talked about how warm air rises and takes up more space than cold air and as warm air rises it cools and causes condensation of water vapour into tiny droplets. The droplets increase in size until it can no longer be supported by an upward movement of air. It then falls to the ground as rain.

We next worked through the diagrams and fill-in-the-blank sentences on our worksheet.

Dakota, Anthony, and Tyler

Taniya, J'Shawn, and Isaiah

Megan, Izabella, and Nora

I nominated Nora as the Little Scientist of the Day for her completed work, her excitement, and her participation. Nora got to take home the bottles and the balloons from the experiment so she could try it at home with her Mommy.

During the day, we read The Great Henry McBride by Dr. Seuss. This is the story of young, Henry and the dreams he has of becoming rabbit farmer, doctor, news broadcaster, and seal trainer when he gets older. But in the end, he thinks he should be satisfied with dreaming for now.
