Day 31

We did some fun things today.

First of all, at 0930 on 09.30 Anthony lost a tooth.

before
after

As a class, we reviewed cardinal direction and worked on a Color by Direction activity.

And then, the students completed the activity on their own. Great job!

We played a fun place value game this afternoon.

The students were divided into 3 teams; red, green, and blue, with a First Grade as the team leader.

Each team received 2 cards. They decided which card they were going to place in the tens position and which card was going to be in the ones position. The team with the largest number won the round.

Megan's team was not getting the large number cards that they wanted.  So, they wanted a lucky rabbit's foot but the settled for my foot. LOL

See you tomorrow for Day 32!

Day 30

It is already day 30! Time goes quickly when you are busy working and playing!

The students played a place value game to get them ready for a new Math Work activity that will available to them tomorrow.

The student rolls a die and writes the number in the tens column. On the second roll, the student puts the number in the ones column. Then the student writes the number that it represented.

We had a total of 4 rotations today and students were given the responsibility of choosing what they wanted to do and where they wanted to do it.

There were also students working at the conference table practicing other skills.

As we finished the day, the students completed Making Words. We worked on the -it and -in word families.

Finally, we read McElligot's Pool. This book is not often read, so it is a treat for the students, who know (sometimes by heart) the words of the most common Dr. Seuss stories.

This tale begins with a little boy, Marco, fishing a tiny, garbage-filled pool. The local farmer tells Marco that there is not a chance in the world that Marco will catch anything there because it is used by the people of the town as a dump. Marco is not convinced.

Join us on Day 31!

Day 29

What a day. It went by in the wink of an eye.

Here is a recap of our day.

The First Graders had their first Spelling test. The top scores were:

100% Megan
100% Anthony
92% Isaiah

The First Graders also had their first Mathematics drill. Here are the top scores:

100% Megan
96% Anthony

All homework has been checked and top homework scores belong to:

162% Sammy (K) *
120% Nora (K) *
101% Nathan (K) *
100% Taniya

*All of these students completed extra work this week in reading, XtraMath, and on MobyMax. Congratulations!

We combined Science and Mathematics this morning and reviewed the weather that we were noting each day of the week.

From the information on our calendar, we created a graph to show how many sunny, partly sunny, cloudy, rainy, and windy days we had.

Students then created their own.

After lunch we began Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll. This is the classic edition that was first published in 1865.

The students had free time, in the classroom, and Dakota, Nathan, and Sammy created this Jackson Pollock-like art piece. This piece is 48" x 24' and now being exhibited in the classroom on the east wall :-)

After recess, we previewed next week's Word Wall Words and finished the day with Horton Hears a Who! by Dr. Seuss.

Have a great weekend!

Day 28

We had a day filled with directions, cardinal directions that is! :-)

As usual, we began with our calendar, weather, place value, and coin. We also reviewed our Word Wall sentences from Tuesday.

The students completed 3 Daily 5 rotations and the conference table was never empty. Nora and J'Shawn worked on 10-frames,...

Nora is really concentrating!

...first graders read, and all the students worked with words, numbers, Read to Self, or were on the computer.

After rotations and before getting ready for lunch, we took a Brain Break!

Stretch Skyward!
Stretch East!
Stretch West!
Stretch North!
Stretch South!
After lunch we finished Stuart Little. What are we going to read next? Check back tomorrow to find out!

Page 128 of Stuart Little contained lots of cardinal directions in every sentence (or so it seemed). As I read the cardinal direction, without prompting at all, the students repeated the word and pointed in the correction direction. It takes a lot longer to read a book when that happens. LOL

See for yourself.

When the students came back from afternoon recess; they had a great treat. Miss Osberg's class put on a play called The King's New Pet and we were the audience.

We even had time to make up new Word Wall Word sentences and...

...to read a delightful book called Leaf by Stephan Michael King.

The story is about a little boy who loves nature and his dog. He hates having his hair cut or even combed and he is happiest of all, when he is outside. One day, a little red bird drops a seed on this messy head of hair and soon with the sun and the rain, the seed begins to grow!

Reminder:

  • Homework is due tomorrow.
  • The First Graders have a Spelling Test and Math Drill.
And this...
