Day 57

Another busy day!

We started with a following directions activity. It was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop.

We read The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle.

And had 3 good rotations.

After Recess, we discussed Living and Non-Living things and what makes them different from each other. We sorted through picture cards.

We read The Curious Garden. This book is enchanting and has a real connection to urban living today.

While Liam is out in the dreary city on a dreary day, he discovers an abandoned elevated railway with struggling wild plants. Liam decides to take on the role of gardener. The seasons pass and the garden spreads through the dreary city, transforming it into a green and colorful world.

The students were intrigued by this picture.

The Curious Garden is very similar to many abandon spaces in cities today. This was the perfect opportunity to show the students what urban renewal is all about. So we checked out pictures of High Line in Manhattan. We looked at the history of the railway and the project, making the long forgotten railway, into a useful and vibrant space for the community.

Thursday is Day 58!
