First Grade Proof-Reading

The 1st grade students began proof-reading exercises this morning. Overall they did a great job. This skill helps with attention to detail as well as small motor skills and penmanship.

Beans - Day 36

Big developments on the "bean front" over the weekend. We have pods. They are small, but they are definitely pods. :-)

See for yourself!

Week 7 Poetry

Leaves Tumble Down

 A perky little elf
Sat up in my backyard tree
Painting attractive leaves
To throw all around me.

 Leaves of golden yellow
Leaves of bright shiny red
They all came tumbling down
About my targeted head.

If You're Happy and You Know It

If you're happy and you know it,
Clap your hands!
If you're happy and you know it,
Clap your hands!
If you're happy and you know it,
And you really want to show it,
If you're happy and you know it,
Clap your hands!

(If you're happy and you know it, nod your head)
(If you're happy and you know it, click your heels)
(If you're happy and you know it, pull your hair)
(If you're happy and you know it, pat your heart)

Surprising Science

A team of palaeontologists from China, the United States and Sweden found a well-preserved fossil of ancient fish that lived in the area 419 million years ago.

The fossil was found Qujing City, Yunnan Province.

The fish, named Entelognathus primordialis, was a 20-cm-long placoderm. The placoderm is an extinct armour-plated fish and the first known animals to evolve true jaws. Their head and thorax were covered by moveable armoured plates and the rest of the body, depending on the species, was covered with scales or skin.

We have flowers and now the waiting begins for pods :-)

Making Words

This morning, we started a new activity called Making Words. We started with the -at family. As the year progresses, Making Words gets more challenging and we use more than one vowel sound in each word.

The students did remarkably good for the first time!

-at Word Family and Making Words

We are starting a new (for Kindergarten students) activity, today, called Making Words. This activity strengthens spelling and phonics skills.

This week, we are working with the -at word family.

Please check your Kindergarten student's folder for this phonics game. This game goes hand-in-hand with our classroom activity and the homework. Playing this game at home increases your child's ability to sound out words and uses small motor skills.

Have fun with it!

Week 6 Poetry

Apples

Apples, apples, one, two, three,
Apples for you,
Apples for me.
Apples big and apples small,
Apple trees tiny and  apple trees tall.
Apples sour,
Apples sweet,
Apples, apples, are nice to eat.

Surprising Science

After a recent survey of the Mount Hood area, scientists discovered a western bumblebee that had not been seen in approximately 15 years.

With this discovery, it is hoped that not only the ecosystem will be helped but that the bees will assist the area agriculture.
